How To Test IQ – 8 Intelligence Forms

The notion “intelligence” is often used to describe a person with wide general knowledge. Sometimes the term is devoted to persons with high IQ score. Even though the latter case is closer to the truth, it is still not exactly right. As discovered already in 1983 – there exist 8 intellect forms.

Besides testing one’s linguistic and logical-mathematical intelligence, tests should also measure six other forms, including musical and naturalist intellect. Otherwise persons that are good at arts, dancing or music are not adequately evaluated – they can score low in traditional IQ tests.

The theory of the eight forms was developed by Dr. Howard Gardner, professor of education at Harvard University. The theory not just introduces with the “eight forms” theory but also pays attention to the limited potential of traditional IQ tests.

Verbal-linguistic
Verbal – linguistic intelligence is one of the traditionally measured intellect forms. It is an ability to use language properly. People who are “word intelligent” are usually good at memorizing words, reading, writing and speaking. They can easily learn new languages and debate about different issues. What do those people do? -Most likely they are lawyers, politicians, writers or teachers.

Logical-mathematical
This form correlates with traditional IQ score the most. Logical-mathematical intellect is ability to perform calculations, reason, investigate, analyze and solve problems. Scientists, mathematicians, doctors and economists are usually people with high logical – mathematical intelligence quotient.

Bodily-kinesthetic
This form of intelligence assures proper muscular movement of a person. People who are “bodily – kinesthetic” intelligent are good at physical activities, for example – sports and dance. Those people remember things through their body; therefore it is easy for them to play musical instruments or tennis, for example.

Interpersonal
Interpersonal intelligence is a trait typical to “people-smart” persons. Those people are usually extroverts and have very good communication skills. As interpersonally intelligent persons are sensitive to people feelings, they empathize easily with others. This form is a “must have” for managers, politicians, teachers and social workers.

Naturalistic
This form can be described as sensitivity to processes in the nature and role of people in their surroundings. People with high “naturalistic intelligence quotient” are able to grow things, interact with animals and observe changes in environment, for example, weather changes.

Intrapersonal
Intrapersonal intelligence reflects capacities of a person to be alone and understand own emotions, motivations and goals. Interpersonally intelligent persons typically are introverts and like to work alone. They often chose to become philosophers, psychologists or theologians.

Visual-spatial
People with high visual-spatial intellect can easily visualize and manipulate objects mentally, solve puzzles and orient themselves in a space. Moreover, they also have good visual memory. Such professions as artist, designer, architect or engineer can be considered as “visual-spatial” abilities reliant.

Musical
Musical form is sensitivity to music, sounds, rhythms and tones. People with high musical intellect often have absolute pitch, they are able to sing, play musical instruments and compose music.

How to test intelligence?
To my best knowledge there is not a single proper test invented yet. Traditional IQ score tests are developed to measure just two of existing eight intelligence forms. Besides numerous calculations and logic – testing tasks, the tests should measure many other intelligence areas. For example, the test should examine how a person communicates with others, how physical tasks are performed and how one interacts with animals.
