I grew up around aviation, graduated from the Air Force Academy and enjoyed a superb 14 years flying fighter jets for the USAF.
I have dealt with emergency procedures, near misses, air-to-air combat , ejected from an out of control jet and other death defying experiences. However, one morning sitting on a commercial airplane hit me. Fear! There was nothing sensible about it. In my brain I knew it was ridiculous to be fearful of flying, yet my emotions were on a completely different journey. Emotions were in charge and not my rational thinking. It seemed worse once I attempted to calm myself with realistic thought.
I experienced increased heart rate, profuse sweating while second guessing the safety of the airliner and talent of the pilots. In my jet aircraft I was in control, sitting in seat 5A on this commercial jet, I was not.
Fear of flying is real. But, it is not about the myriad reports concluding air travel is safer than walking or driving. It is really about a real emotional fear stemming from not having control.
