Midlife Crisis Symptoms – Your Essential Guide

There are many degrees of midlife crisis symptoms, some glaringly obvious, others more subtle or discreet. This essential guide takes a look at several signs to watch out for in people who are approaching their midlife.

Of course, none of these midlife symptoms in themselves is anything necessarily to be concerned about, but when brought into line with perhaps odd behavior in other aspects of their lives, it could well be that they are approaching a midlife transition or crisis.

• Dressing younger – This is often one of the first signs of someone going into midlife crisis. It is a quick fix to looking younger and beating off the threat of old age.

• Looking to do more extreme things – They will tend to either revert to past interests of their earlier lives or take an interest in more dynamic and extreme activities.

• Loss of affection – Another key sign is the loss of affection from your partner or spouse. They will seem more interested in being centre of the world.

• Lack of communication – Sometimes, your partner will simply clam up and not speak to you about anything that concerns deeper matters. Perhaps even in the day to day things, they will clam up.

• The sports car – A very clear indication of a person going into a midlife crisis is the desire or purchase of a sports car or convertible, or other out of character type purchases.

• Doing crazy things that are completely out of character. This is also noticeable from outsiders who may comment “is this person on drugs” or “have they hit their head?”.

• Seeking extra marital affairs. Classic symptom of midlife crisis.

Also, someone who is in midlife crisis will themselves, not actually see it. They feel that there is no problem with themselves and this in itself is the major problem. As you cannot control them, the crisis in effect is yours, and not theirs.

They have become alien to you, a complete personality change which they do not see, but you do. This is probably the biggest indication that someone is in a midlife crisis.

As previously stated, none of these aspects on their own means a person has midlife crisis symptoms, but it is important to be aware and try to nip in the bud any movement towards a crisis. A problem taken control of early will always have a greater chance of being worked through with success.

But there are many other midlife crisis symptoms and it is very important to be aware of as many of these as possible.

Ultimately, surviving midlife crisis is paramount and it is very possible to manage it and come out the other side of it a better person.
