A good friend recently suggested one of his best-loved self-help books to me – it was the most recent in a growing list of recommended reading. In chatting with him, I enquired as to how he was finding putting into practice his learning from all his reading. It emerged from our conversation that, in fact, he was a life-long student of living life to the full but was likely to never actually give it a go. He informed me that a friend of his had suggested to him that he “stop reading the bloody books and starting doing it!”

Bookshops are full of personal development books. This is big business – possibly the fastest growing sector of the publishing market. Also, personal development websites proliferate – offering all manner of inducements to purchase their program which is guaranteed to change your life in five minutes!

But none of these books or programs will change your life. They may well point you in the right direction, provide you with an understanding that had been absent from your range of experience or knowledge or suggest concrete suggestions on how to get more out of life, change your life, transform yourself or whatever. no doubt about it, there is some excellent stuff available – and some innovative and practical personal development online help – but none of it is going to be of any use to you until you put it into practice for yourself and regularly put it into practice.

It’s down to you to change your life. Only you can grasp control of the awesome inner power that is simply waiting for you to muster up the courage or energy to unleash it. The interesting thing is that much of the advice provided by websites or books requires very little work of you, requires that you make only very minor alterations to the way in which you use your mind. Unfortunatley though, having been in this business for over fourteen years, I have seen far too many people unwilling to take five minutes each day to make the other twenty three hours and fifty five minutes so much better.

And this leads me to the main point – one that I’ve already alluded to – you have to keep putting what you learn into practice. No book, program or package will change your life in five minutes. You’re not going to change your life in five minutes. However, five minutes each and every day is an entirely different proposition – if you make or take the time to ensure that your mind is up to speed each and every morning then your life will change beyond all recognition. Psychology tells us in no uncertain terms that normal people perceive only what they expect to perceive and only experience what they expect to experience – that the normal life is dictated by the sadly blind normal mind. Open your mind each morning, change your expectations and your life will change. But, in essence, it’s entirely up to you – no one else can do it for you.

As Carly Simon’s song so profoundly says; ‘Nobody does it Better!’

That is exactly the point of Value Quotient as it relates to indispensability. You are a master of a particular niche, with a sagacious ability to know how to make your contribution enduring. It takes tenacity, focus, discernment and a keen sense. This is what I call your value quotient. Your worth or the value of your expertise and its results. The formula looks simple but like a Rubick’s Cube very few can effectively implement it with lasting results.

Having witnessed the measurable, quantifiable and sustainable results from a master at work, it is evident that the value quotient is an effective tool for any company to use for human capital. Wisdom and business intelligence dictates seeking and retaining the expertise of a master who possesses the arcane formula for success. Measurable, quantifiable and sustainable results can add up to longevity and retention.

Yes, you can be indispensable if there is that ‘secret ingredient’, that ‘certain something’ that you have and no one in your area of expertise does. It is your signature, your mark, which is exclusive to you and no one else. It is a thought leader, a futurist, an uncommon person who senses, understands, knows and links the missing pieces together to make the whole. I will take it a step further and say it is the one who is a master, exceptional at his/her craft, has the longevity, sustainability, and with results that sets them apart from the others. Once you figure that part out, you have the ‘golden ticket’ that can make you indispensable.

Sharing what you know is not the same as knowing what you know – in creativity, you got to have “it”. “It” being the confidence of knowing that you know. Yes, you can teach others what you know, and train them. However, if their heart, their passion, their mindset do not all meet at the intersection to connect – it is a futile effort.

Engaging those who thrive and love what they do, and want to learn, are the ones who will succeed, be of high value, retained and most likely indispensable. These individuals are almost a breed of their own, intense and passionate, they are thought leaders, change agents, trailblazers….and highly sought after.

With the ever-changing landscape of globally connected businesses and consumers, adaptability is of paramount importance to be able to meet the wants/needs of the target audience. Once again, the master, the futurist and thought leader has already anticipated and is implementing changes to be the trailblazer, front-runner, the first to carve out a niche, and stake claim to that territory. The high Value Quotient is essential to finding and maintaining the edge over the competition. As a business owner and advocate to this process, I have experienced the birthing, training and releasing of highly capable professionals resulting from this inherent value in a master whose sharply tuned skills is one of the fundamental elements to successful and sustainable results and indispensability.

Those who choose to focus only on what benefits them, will find disappointment, and rarely make a distinguishable mark in their environments. Their focus is on looking for the fastest and easiest way to the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Instead of satisfaction in giving their best, their best is focused on themselves and how they can get the most instead of giving their best and can find themselves always searching for the elusive perfect job without factoring in the value quotient. This type of person is out of focus, maintaining a strict cookie-cutter style template, with a refusal to share or expand their knowledge perhaps out of fear for their job or being replaced.

Continual learning; drilling down, mining, trailblazing and a voracious appetite for excellence – these are some of the internal triggers that must be set into motion to achieve a higher ratio of indispensability. Competition is fierce in most fields of expertise in business. The plethora of consultants, both in technology and marketing add witness to the already booming and rapid pace of expert offerings to the global business world. So then, how do you make yourself indispensable or at least considered of high value to be retained? What is your value quotient? Have you thought of reasons why you are indispensable? Why should someone choose to retain you over someone else in the same line of work, similar job description, similar talents? Do you know how to answer that or have you even thought of it as an important part of your work?

It is not the big salary – it is the big vision, passion, active and progressive thinking, the futurist who is able to implement ideas that bring sustainable results and indispensability.

To be able to say; ” I breathe this day in and day out, it oozes from my pores like a delicious perfume, its the passion and love for what I day each day, that gets me excited about the work I do.”

Money comes, money goes – but what you know, no one can take from you. That is the greatest wealth we must value, cherish and seek after to be indispensable.

The intensity of any relationship is based on the emotional quotient the individuals have towards each other. Emotional quotient popularly known as EQ is as important as IQ. Consider a anecdote in which the parents and their single child was drowning in the flood and they had a chance for only one person to escape. It is the emotional quotient of the parents that has saved the child from the flood. The amount of the quotient has overcome the very feeling of the death and it was an easy decision for the parents to save the child. EQ plays a key role in changing the direction of your life. Emotions can even be attached to non-living things such as ones passion for work, sport and commitments in general. The greater this value, easier it is to step forward.

Different culture exhibit different ways to show their love and respect towards a person. Ultimately it leads to only one conclusion which is building relationships. Emotional Quotient is required at a number of places and can be analyzed at different situations. Let us consider few of the scenarios to explain the importance of this element in our daily life.

Customer service: The basic definition of customer service is to serve the needs of the customer in a better way. Addressing their concerns in a polite manner and making them feel that “you care” is the must. When a problem is stated by the customer, the agent has to empathize the problem and think of how to solve it. Only with the help of the empathy this service can be rendered in a better manner. Our mind would automatically search for a bunch of results for the problem stated and choose the best one out of intuition.

In relationships, EQ plays a deciding factor. The basic and the simplest rule of having any relationship straight and without conflict is to built exact amount of EQ towards that person. And how to build EQ? Very simple. Just like how one should work on their intelligence for increasing their IQ, one would work on the emotions as well. In this competitive world its difficult to give quantity time but giving quality time is possible. Giving surprises, gifts, sweet talk over the phone, pictures and capturing of memories and cherishing them are few examples of the quality time which can help build emotional quotient leading to a good, clean and conflict free relationship. In relationships, EQ plays a deciding factor.

We all know about intelligence: the kind measured by IQ (and Mensa) tests. A measurement of verbal-linguistic and logical-mathematic skills, this appears on first consideration to be an accurate portrait of intellect. Howard Gardner, a psychologist at Harvard, theorized (and popularized) the concept of “multiple intelligences” during the past two decades, a theory which highlights types of intelligence beyond this measure: musical, kinetic, visual-spatial, and more. While critics suggest that some of these so-called “intelligences” are actually talents, Gardner counters with the proposal that if they are, so are the abilities one might have in the original concept of intelligence – that is, if we are musically talented (rather than having a high musical intellect), then we are also verbally or mathematically talented. The concepts are parallel.

Daniel Goleman, a psychologist at Rutgers and visiting professor at Harvard, developed two aspects of Gardner’s theory – intrapersonal and interpersonal intelligences – into what he refers to as emotional intelligence. His book by the same name, published in 1995, was a best-seller for nearly two years. His earliest work was in the field of meditation, and he directs a center dedicated to the study of meditation’s effects on emotional intelligence. Currently, he is working on a concept he calls, social intelligence.

Many scientists are now studying the concept of emotional intelligence, and it is applied to business, education, politics, and many other settings. Unlike the traditional IQ, which is more or less static throughout one’s life, emotional intelligence can be improved with training.

Emotional intelligence [EI] is both innate and learned. Often, the distinction is made between emotional intelligence, which a person has to some degree or another from birth, and emotional quotient [EQ], which is measurable and includes learned skills. Emotional intelligence is given many definitions, but one that I particularly like is: “the innate potential to feel, use, communicate, recognize, remember, describe, identify, learn from, manage, understand and explain emotions” [Steve Hein].

Synonyms for the concept of emotional intelligence might be: emotional sensitivity, emotional memory, emotional processing and problem-solving ability, or emotional learning ability.

There is a generally accepted, 4-branch model of emotional intelligence: emotional perception, (for example, identifying emotions in faces, music, stories), emotional facilitation of thought (such as, relating emotions to other mental sensations, and using emotion in reason and problem-solving), emotional understanding (solving emotional problems – knowing how various emotions are similar or opposite to one another, and what relations they convey), and emotional management (understanding the social implications of one’s emotions and having the ability to regulate them in oneself and in others).

A simpler and more direct version is this: (1) accurately identify emotions; (2) use emotions to help you think; (3) understand what causes emotions; and, (4) manage to stay open to these emotions in order to experience the wisdom of our feelings.

Our brains have three primary regions: the neocortex, by which all cognition occurs; the brain stem, the concern of which is primal, reflexive functions designed for survival (such as breathing and heartbeat); and, the limbic system. The latter, also called the “paleo-mammalian brain”, is what we know to be our emotional center. The brain developed in the primordial human, and develops in each fetus, from the brain stem upward, based on importance for survival; as the limbic system develops after the brain stem and before the neocortex, it may actually be more important to our survival than our conscious thought processes.

There’s a saying in biomedicine: “That to which we give attention grows.” The human species has emphasized the abilities of the neocortex for millenia, and the neocortex in present-day humans is vastly larger and more well-developed than that of our ancestors. However, the limbic system is under-developed, and the argument can be made that we would do well to place more emphasis upon this aspect of our intellect.

This is also culturally based: in Asia, for example, great emphasis is placed upon social harmony and, therefore, emotional intelligence. Connectedness is highly valued, and emotional resonance with one another the basis of society. In Korea, where I made my home for five years, this is called nunchi, “the subtle art of listening and gauging another’s mood” [Hilty, Streetwise in Seoul]. It is such a powerful phenomenon that Korean people feel their thoughts might be able to be read by one another, and they keep their emotions well in check. It’s also one of the cultural difficulties between Koreans and non-Asian foreigners who have no awareness of or experience with this idea.

In our brains, the amygdala is a part of the limbic system that responds quickly and dramatically to perceived threat. Designed to protect the human from harm in a world of constant physical stress, it is now somewhat obsolete in that, except for those in war zones for example, most of us are living in a “complex, symbolic reality with symbolic threats” [Goleman]. The amygdala communicates directly with the pre-frontal cortex [PFC], the “executive center” of the brain which scans all possible intellectual input for this “perceived threat” and then controls, through the left PFC in particular, the over-reaction that the amygdala would otherwise generate. Of course, many other parts of the brain also contribute to emotional intellect.

Scientists have also hypothesized and are studying the possibility of mirror neurons in humans, which are known to exist in primates; these neurons elicit a mirror image of what another organism is doing, feeling, or intending, to synchronize interaction. It seems that human brains interact as a social brain network, attuning and regulating themselves to the circuitry of one another.

The circuitry between the limbic system and the prefrontal cortex isn’t fully developed until one’s mid-20s, so when it comes to emotional regulation, we must teach – and be patient with – youth. All neural circuitry is malleable, able to continue to be altered and developed throughout a person’s life, a quality which is called neuroplasticity. There are many ways to develop our Emotional Quotient, from tools of self-awareness such as mindfulness to a variety of meditative practices which science has shown to strengthen the left prefrontal cortex. Self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and social skills are the four areas in which the development of EQ focuses.

It’s imperative for our own growth and development, as individuals and as societies, that we learn the wisdom of our emotions – necessary for decision-making and for creating a more benevolent and interconnected world.

What is EI? (Emotional Intelligence)
The phrase “Emotional Intelligence” was coined by Yale psychologist Peter Salovey and the University of New Hampshire’s John Mayer in 1990. They defined it as”The ability to perceive emotion, integrate emotion to facilitate thought, understand emotions and to regulate emotions to promote personal growth.”
It is measured by Emotional Intelligence Quotient (EQ).

In simpler terms, it means that a person with high emotional intelligence will have a natural ability to detect and decipher emotions in others’ faces and voices, be sensitive to even the slightest variations in mood and also harness their own emotions, negative or positive ones, to be managed to achieve
intended goals.

So why is EI important?

According to Daniel Goleman,Harvard psychology Ph.D., New York Times science writer, EQ can make a greater difference in one’s life compared to IQ. It is said that in the corporate world, IQ gets you hired, but EQ gets you promoted!Goleman likes to tell of a manager at AT&T’s Bell Labs, a think tank forbbrilliant engineers in New Jersey, who was asked to rank his top performers. They weren’t the ones with the highest IQs; they were the ones whose E-mail got answered. Those workers who were good collaborators and networkers and popular with colleagues were more likely to get the cooperation they needed to reach their goals than the socially awkward, lone-wolf geniuses. People who possess high emotional intelligence are the people who truly succeed in work as well as play, building flourishing careers and lasting, meaningful relationships!you are not your emotions

Steps to enhance your EI

Although, no well-conducted, published studies have been reported in regard to raising emotional intelligence to date, it is widely agreed that people can improve their emotional knowledge and improve their social functioning!

DEVELOP YOUR EMOTIONAL SELF-AWARENESS
Whenever you feel an emotion you’re not comfortable with, you can ask yourself “what is this feeling trying to tell me?” You should also take time out to relax and be still, observing thoughts and feelings as they come and go. This will give a degree of detachment, as you realise you are more than whatever thoughts and emotions you are experiencing at the time.Another great way is to keep an emotional journal and take five minutes each morning to write down how you’re feeling. By noting down the trend, you will gradually become more aware of your own emotions and better understand them!

REMEMBER – YOU ARE NOT YOUR EMOTIONS

As humans, it is difficult for us to avoid feeling certain ways when things happen. Thus, it’s how you respond to those feelings that matters. Whatever emotion you’re feeling, you still have a choice about how you act on it – and that’s what counts! Judging yourself does not make you a better person.

Instead, learn to stand up to failures, resist the urge to scream at whoever is irritating you, count to 10 slowly, breathe slowly, turn your mind to nature, pray and ask God for a calm and humble heart and attitude.

Philippians 4:6-7 “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” In the end, this will enable us to develop patience and be still amidst difficult moments.

PUT YOURSELF IN THE OTHER PERSON’S SHOES

Everyone sees the world in different ways, and everything that person does and says makes sense from their viewpoint, even if it makes no sense to you. By learning to truly place yourself in the other person’s situation, you will realise that often while the actions may seem wrong to you, their motivation behind the actions are good. It will allow us to understand them better and hence, foster stronger and more meaningful relationships.

GET SOME DISTANCE FROM THE BAD STUFF

It has been researched and observed that humans spend the most of their time worrying about things, and among these things, most of them do not end up happening, while the small percentage that do take place, was a lot less stressful or fearful then what we imagined. Distance yourself. So, one thing we should do is to avoid allowing ourselves to sink into self-pity or indulge in depressing thoughts. Often, these are dangerous. The world does not revolve around ourselves and when we find ourselves becoming increasingly self-centred and dejected, we should make an effort to pull out of it and think happy, cheerful and more optimistic thoughts! This will give rise to more purposeful life, more friends and better quality work.

You’ve heard of IQ, your intellectual quotient. It measures your intellectual intelligence.

Emotional quotient (EQ) measures your emotional intelligence (EI). According to Emotional Intelligence author Daniel Goleman, emotional intelligence includes self-awareness and impulse control, persistence, zeal and self-motivation, empathy and social deftness.

EI can be summarized by asking, “Do you play well with others?” No? I suggest you learn. A key success *secret* that *they* don’t tell you is that EI has a greater influence on your success than IQ any day. Share your toys. Play a team sport. Learn to play well with others.

MQ

MQ, your money quotient, measures your money intelligence (MI). It tells how much you know about money. How well-versed are you in money topics — investments, retirement accounts, savings plans? How much do you know about money — this *medium of exchange* that impacts and defines the quality of your life and relationships?

Money is the last not-to-be-discussed-in-polite-company subject in the United States. While we talk about sex, politics, and race relations in public, money has been exempted from public discourse. It is shrouded in terminology designed to confuse, intimidate, and stop us from asking.

Such strategically-imposed silence has allowed our personal and collective treasuries to be raped and plundered by self-involved white-collar guys/gals during the past decade. Money talk avoidance is partly responsible for the trillion-dollar bailout we the people are now responsible for paying back. Collective money silence has enabled a band of greedy people to rob us blind. This pisses me off.

So I’m cultivating a higher money mindset, and a big-girl, bad-ass money attitude. I’m so over the intimidation tactics designed to keep me under-informed. My money intelligence is on a steep incline!

When I work as a financial and business consultant, I ask the same basic question at least seven different ways. I practice it. It is amazing how different the answers received are based on how I phrase the question. I now use this technique to increase my MQ.

ASK the Question!

When in doubt, ASK a question. When you want clarity, ask a question. When you KNOW the answer, ask a question to see if the “expert” knows too. Ask as many money questions as you like. And get real answers. No more obfuscation! No more dazzle me with nonsense.

Push — sometimes hard — for answers. Here’s how. “What does that mean?” is a great question. Ask your financial advisor to define the terms she uses. “What does return on investment mean? “How do you compute the yield on that?” “Please explain that concept in terms that I can relate to and more-readily understand” works well. Say, “Can you say more about that?”

Questions are amazing tools to gain information about topics and people. Put the onus on others to educate you in their areas of expertise. Be willing to say, “I don’t know. Explain it to me.” Get comfortable with this approach. You’ll be amazed at how quickly you can learn 80% of what there is to know about any particular topic.

Still don’t understand what derivatives are? Fine. Just don’t invest in them or companies that invested in them. Duh.

Do you want to understand more about your money? Ready to talk about money?

IQ test means Intelligence Quotient, with the help of IQ tests intelligence test you can measure your ability of your work in any field, if you get high IQ level in IQ intelligence test that means there is chances of highly complex jobs.

Let me begin with a small story…

Brian and Martha were classmates in their high school. While Brian was voted the most popular student for his friendliness and charm, Martha was not so popular but she was an intellectually brilliant student with high hopes for her future. She found it difficult to mingle with most of the students as they were not as smart as she was. Years later, Martha is a lawyer; however she still has the same problem of forming relationships. On the other hand, Brian is a happily married man and running his own business. He did not go to a college but is happy and contented in his life. Ironically, they lived in the same neighborhood where Brian is the most talked about person and President of the neighborhood whereas Martha still chooses to live aloof. Though she is professionally sound, yet not many of her clients do like her as she cannot empathize with them.

Thus, Martha though intelligent but lack of EI is a hindrance to her being a popular lawyer where as Brian with average IQ becomes happy and successful in life with his excellent EI skills.

But, what is EI and why is it so important for success?

Emotional Intelligence (EI), often measured as an Emotional Intelligence Quotient (EQ), is a term that describes the ability to identify, assess and manage the emotions of one’s self and appropriately respond to others and motivate them.

Hiring the right person with right skill is of main concern for the head hunters. With the advent of technology, hiring process has become increasingly complex; companies not only focus on the hard skills (e.g., technical expertise, work experience and education) but also the assessment of personality traits. Competencies like stress management, assertiveness skills and empathy are critical success factor which should not be overlooked.

Competences
Emotional Intelligence consists of several, well-defined basic competencies that absolutely anyone can learn. Some of the competences which an emotionally intelligent individual should have are as follows:
Self-Awareness – the ability to know one’s internal states, preferences, resources and intuitions. This includes:
Emotional Awareness: recognizing one’s emotions and their impacts
Self-Assessment: knowing own strengths and limits
Self-Confidence: believing in one’s self-worth and capabilities

Self-Regulation – managing one’s internal states, impulses and resources. This includes:
Self-Control: keeping disruptive emotions and impulses in check
Trustworthiness: maintaining standards of honesty and integrity
Conscientiousness: taking responsibility for personal performance
Adaptability: flexibility in handling change
Innovation: being comfortable with new ideas, novel approaches and new information

Self-Expectations and Motivation – the emotional tendencies that guide or facilitate the reaching of goals. This includes:
Achievement Drive: striving to improve or meet a standard of excellence
Commitment: aligning with the goals of the group or organization
Initiative: readiness to act on opportunities
Optimism: pursuing goals despite obstacles and setbacks

Empathy – awareness of others’ feelings needs and concerns. This includes:
Understanding Others: sensing the feelings and perspectives of others and taking an active interest in their concerns
Developing Others: sensing the development needs of others and bolstering their abilities
Service Orientation: anticipating, recognizing and meeting customer needs
Leveraging Diversity: cultivating opportunities through different kinds of people

Social Skills – adeptness at inducing desirable responses in others. This includes:
Influence: employing effective tactics for persuasion
Communicate: listening actively and sending convincing messages
Manage Conflict: negotiating and resolving disagreements
Leadership: inspiring and guiding individuals and groups
Change Catalyst: initiating or managing change
Build Bonds: nurturing instrumental relationships
Collaboration and Cooperation: working with others towards shared goals
Team Spirit: creating group synergy in pursuing collective goals
Political Awareness: reading a group’s emotional currents and power relationships
Emotional Sensitivity : ability and capacity to effectively understanding intensity of emotional arousal, managing the immediate environment and controlling negative emotions like anger, irritation, excessive anxiety etc.

Impact in Workplace
Ever since the researchers found out that individuals with high EQ are more productive that others, importance of EI in workplace has been acknowledged. Since, workplace includes groups of people with varying ideas and opinions, effective EI or EQ is necessary to achieve target. We are emotional beings and all our actions and reactions are determined by our emotions. EQ is not about being nice neither about unleashing our emotions. It is about being aware of our emotions and able to express feelings appropriately and effectively. Effective management of emotions improves the quality of our decisions thus making us more productive.

Studies show that people with high EQ are the best performers and have high levels of interpersonal skills and thus are more satisfied at work. Emotionally balanced employees are empathetic, adaptable, self-aware, self-confident, transparent, optimistic, inspirational leaders and good at managing disagreements and stress. With strong EI one can control, direct, lead and manage his or her own moods and impulses, and communicate with others much effectively. Individual with high EI are good problem solvers and decision makers. They can skillfully prioritize their task and quickly realize their goals.

An exciting fact about EQ is that unlike our IQ which does not change after our teens, EQ can continue to grow and develop as it largely is a learned area of expertise.

The world today requires us to make many critical decisions regarding personal and professional life, in a day. A businessman needs to make quick and efficient decisions about the company he leads. An investor needs to make decisions as to what firm is best to invest in at the given day and time. These are only a couple of examples of the kinds of quick decisions people sometimes need to make.

There was a time when people were told by their superiors that when you make such important decisions in life you need to leave your emotions out of the thought process. People were encouraged to think mechanically if you may, and let numbers and equations be the only factors that affect their decision.

However, a study on the past success of businessmen shows that it was that group of people who did best in life who took their emotions into account when making critical decisions. Thus we see the need to study this phenomenon called emotional intelligence or EQ.

Successful people are those that are able to deal well with their own emotions and who are able to recognize the emotions of others around them as well.

Since it is not possible to remove emotions from your life, you would do better to deal with them rather than try and suppress them. Suppressed emotions can only result in frustrated feelings. Even in business deals, you need to keep in mind that it is in fact people who are behind the work flow. When you understand people better you will be able to deal with them better, and therefore get a better work result out of them.

Every body knows that making the right contacts is a big part of being a successful businessman. When your social skills are right, you make contacts easily, and you social skills depend on your understanding of people’s emotions. No one wants to stay in touch with a rude or manner less person. Here we see emotional intelligence at work yet again. When we have a good level of EQ, we understand our own selves much better and therefore are at peace with our inner self as well as with other people around us.

Also, when you have the right balance of emotional intelligence understanding, you can handle stress like never before. Rather than get frustrated at situations beyond our control, we will begin to see on the brighter side of things always, and that is a healthy attitude that can only do you good in the long run.

Any way you look at it, you cannot run away from your emotions. Rather if you tried to harness the energy they create for a positive impact on your life, you will see life become better by the day.

IQ test means Intelligence Quotient, with the help of IQ tests intelligence test you can measure your ability of your work in any field, if you get high IQ level in IQ intelligence test that means there is chances of highly complex jobs.

Emotional Intelligence. This term keeps popping up everywhere at the moment, it was even mentioned on the Ryan Tubridy breakfast show this morning in relation to Big Brother! What is so important about Emotional Intelligence or E.I., and what relevance has it to you as a person, in your life, work and in your training and development?

What determines Success?
Alfred Binet carried out the first cognitive intelligence test in France in 1905. This later became known as the Stanford-Binet test, after it was standardised at Stanford University for the American population. Since that time, many have argued that this test only measured one of our intelligences (others include emotional, spatial, musical, and artistic). However, it has taken over 50 years for Emotional Intelligence to be taken seriously. Emotional Intelligence is how we relate to ourselves, others and our environment in general. It is defined by Dr. Reuven Bar-on, as ‘an array of non-cognitive capabilities, competencies, and skills that influence one’s ability to succeed in coping with environmental demands and pressures; and it is a factor in determining one’s ability to succeed in life.’

We all want to be successful in our lives and, until now, success equalled straight As. The average student often looked at the high achievers at school as being more successful than they were. Yet, evidence does not prove this to be the case. Studies have been carried out following children from primary school, through second and on into third level education. They then returned at various stages to these same individuals to check how they were faring in the race called life, taking in all aspects including work, home and family. What they found was that academic success does not always equal ‘being a success’. The average student was often the most successful, when all aspects of their life were taken into consideration, often having the better job and happier home life. Clearly, Cognitive Intelligence or IQ is not the only factor in determining success, there is another intelligence at play, and that is Emotional Intelligence.

Unpredictable behaviour
Have you ever worked in an environment in which the atmosphere was tense, due to the unpredictable behaviour of one member? Do you remember (or are you experiencing) the stress that such an atmosphere causes? Have you ever noticed the domino effect this has on everyone in the workplace? How can you function properly in an environment like this if you are waiting for a sudden outburst of uncontrolled anger, verbal abuse, blame or criticism, sudden highs or lows in mood? This is not a healthy way to work, and it is also not a productive way to work. It is particularly stressful if that person is a supervisor or manager.

People function better, and are much more effective and productive if they are in a happy and relaxed environment. They will want to go to work and will work more effectively; they will also be willing to put in that extra effort. So how do you improve behaviour, work atmosphere, and all the connected areas? The answer is the use of Emotional Intelligence.

The Use of Emotional Intelligence
Daniel Goleman in his bestselling book, Emotional Intelligence: Why it can matter more than IQ (1995), defines E.I. as ‘the capacity for recognising our own feelings and those of others, for motivating ourselves, for managing emotions well in ourselves and in our relationships.’ The unpredictable member of the workforce described above did not have this capacity, hence his colleagues suffered as a result. The ability to manage emotions was not present, and the skills needed to cope with the pressures of everyday life and work (as defined by Dr. Bar-on) were not developed. His colleagues suffered due to the lack of emotional intelligence present in this individual. Emotional intelligence can also be lacking in teams and companies in general. The good news is, that when areas of weakness are identified, in the individual, team or company, they can be worked upon and improved.

There are many people associated with the growing awareness of E.I., among them Peter Salovey and John Meyer, who in 1990 defined E.I. as ‘the ability to monitor one’s own and others’ feelings and emotions, to discriminate among them and to use this information to guide one’s thinking and actions.’ This definition is very relevant to behaviour within the work environment and, if a workforce could behave in this manner, this would create an emotionally intelligent environment in which the unpredictable behaviour mentioned above would not occur, or could be dealt with effectively if it did occur.

The fact is that no amount of training and development, education or team building will have true impact, if the E.I. of the individual or group is under-developed. The introduction and application of E.I. to corporate environments can reinforce the success of the workforce in general, whatever the activity or size of a company. E.I. is necessary at all levels and, if senior levels embrace and apply E.I. in their daily dealings with all peers and employees, this will filter down through a company.

I am sure you know about IQ. It is established as a measure of a person’s intelligence as a measure of the intelligence of other people. The ‘quotient’ is the ratio of personal intelligence using 100 as that of normal intelligence. This concept of quotients has been applied to various other aspects of human life. An interesting one is that of age, where chronological age, physiological age, and psychological age are often all different.

How about a civility quotient? In this age of road rage, drive-by shootings and murders, indiscriminant sexual assault, and hate crimes that permeate the news channels continually, where has civility gone? All of the legislation in the world will never produce civility, since the moment a law is passed there are those who will be trying to determine ways around that law; and even to change its meaning and interpretation despite what the words may be.

A long time ago, my father defined a gentleman to me using the words of G.K. Chesterton: “A gentleman is a person who never deliberately injures another person in any way.”

I still remember my first day at the University. I was enrolled in Honors Mathematics and Physics, and it was a very hot mid-September day in 1947. Many of my classmates had served in the Armed Forces during the Second World War. Now, having completed their high school education, like me they were entering university. We, of course, were wearing jackets and ties. The first lecture was in the Physics Auditorium with about 300 present; but the second lecture was a spin-off class in English Literature with about 25 students. The room was very hot. There was no air conditioning in those days. All of us removed our jackets. The professor came in wearing an academic gown, gave us a stern look, and said, “Put on your jackets. You’re at the university now.” I quietly did. So did all the former flyers, sailors and soldiers in the room with me.

In 1961, I was a Professor of Mathematics at the University of Waterloo. All of my classes were in the graduate school where, of course, we wore casual clothing. One day I was asked to proctor a second year Physics class. When I walked into the room, the stench almost bowled me over. I soon located the source. It was a scruffy looking student who reeked of every odor imaginable, a mixture of those coming from his body and those from his clothes. His hair was obviously wildly unkempt, his face was dirty, and unshaven, and his fingernails looked as if he had been grubbing in a mud pit. I won’t describe his attire. I very quietly went up to him and told him to leave and not to come back to any class until he was cleaned up and classmates could stand beside him without getting nauseous and almost retching. He left, and immediately afterwards, the room uprooted in loud applause and hurrahs. None of the other students had the gumption to tell him what I had. This was the beginning of the rebellious 60′s. This student returned to class the next day and had not only cleaned himself up, but had shaved. Apparently it was a major wake up call for him because his regular professors told me that thereafter he was a model student and moved from an “F” to an “A”.

The upshot of it was that I was voted the most popular professor on the campus because I cared enough for all of my students to exercise common sense. I could have been accused of being uncivil to that one student, but I was really very civil towards all the other students. I felt then, as I feel now, that what I did was necessary and vital for the common good. In other words, I acted on behalf of the many – the majority. I didn’t worry about whether or not my action was politically correct. In those days, of course, we never encountered that term. As a matter of fact, having progressed through my university education with a lot of fellow students who had fought hard through a bitter war, some of them badly wounded, there would have been no time to exit from common sense and to start worrying about whether actions were politically correct. Actions were taken because they had to be taken, because they were needed, and because they were of benefit to the majority of the people. For them, there was nothing politically correct about warfare. There was nothing politically correct about taking care of your fellow warrior; it was a privilege, a duty, and an honor. Like me, they would have asked that student to leave because it was the right thing to do.

Of course, people don’t come to class like that anymore – at least I hope not – but that’s not the point. Can you imagine the situation today? I would have to phone my lawyer to find out what I could or couldn’t say. I would have to be concerned about the threat of a law suit by the student. He could accuse me of harassment, prejudice against the unclean, and denial of his rights to free speech.

You all know that free speech is now extended to actions associated with the freedom of expression. This stretching of a very civil and needed right included by our fathers of federation within the Constitution and the Bill of Rights were meant to protect a fundamental right of freedom. There is a major difference in my mind between absolute freedom and license. As one associate justice of the Supreme Court stated, I believe it was either Justice Brandeis, or Justice Holmes, who stated something like the following: “Freedom of speech does not extend to hollering ‘fire’ in a crowded theater.”

It’s about time common sense returns and we return to true civility in our relationships with others, taking into account our impact upon others. Freedom of speech does not grant a license to be obnoxious and difficult, or to impose narrow single-minded opinions upon others under the guise of protecting one’s rights. In a democracy, it is the will of the majority that counts. Somehow or other, we have turned this upside down and allowed the dictatorship of a minority, even a single person, to outweigh the desires of many.

Nor should persons with power and money be allowed to sway votes, influence policy, and satisfy their greed or lust for power at the expense of others. The credo that ‘People don’t count’ must be dismissed from the minds of those who would thwart the will of the people for their own ends. Might must not be allowed to make right..

Perhaps we can return to what my father taught me from Chesterton. After all, civility is nothing more than good manners, an agreeable way of living with each other. People do count. That would generate a high civility quotient.
