The intensity of any relationship is based on the emotional quotient the individuals have towards each other. Emotional quotient popularly known as EQ is as important as IQ. Consider a anecdote in which the parents and their single child was drowning in the flood and they had a chance for only one person to escape. It is the emotional quotient of the parents that has saved the child from the flood. The amount of the quotient has overcome the very feeling of the death and it was an easy decision for the parents to save the child. EQ plays a key role in changing the direction of your life. Emotions can even be attached to non-living things such as ones passion for work, sport and commitments in general. The greater this value, easier it is to step forward.

Different culture exhibit different ways to show their love and respect towards a person. Ultimately it leads to only one conclusion which is building relationships. Emotional Quotient is required at a number of places and can be analyzed at different situations. Let us consider few of the scenarios to explain the importance of this element in our daily life.

Customer service: The basic definition of customer service is to serve the needs of the customer in a better way. Addressing their concerns in a polite manner and making them feel that “you care” is the must. When a problem is stated by the customer, the agent has to empathize the problem and think of how to solve it. Only with the help of the empathy this service can be rendered in a better manner. Our mind would automatically search for a bunch of results for the problem stated and choose the best one out of intuition.

In relationships, EQ plays a deciding factor. The basic and the simplest rule of having any relationship straight and without conflict is to built exact amount of EQ towards that person. And how to build EQ? Very simple. Just like how one should work on their intelligence for increasing their IQ, one would work on the emotions as well. In this competitive world its difficult to give quantity time but giving quality time is possible. Giving surprises, gifts, sweet talk over the phone, pictures and capturing of memories and cherishing them are few examples of the quality time which can help build emotional quotient leading to a good, clean and conflict free relationship. In relationships, EQ plays a deciding factor.

The world today requires us to make many critical decisions regarding personal and professional life, in a day. A businessman needs to make quick and efficient decisions about the company he leads. An investor needs to make decisions as to what firm is best to invest in at the given day and time. These are only a couple of examples of the kinds of quick decisions people sometimes need to make.

There was a time when people were told by their superiors that when you make such important decisions in life you need to leave your emotions out of the thought process. People were encouraged to think mechanically if you may, and let numbers and equations be the only factors that affect their decision.

However, a study on the past success of businessmen shows that it was that group of people who did best in life who took their emotions into account when making critical decisions. Thus we see the need to study this phenomenon called emotional intelligence or EQ.

Successful people are those that are able to deal well with their own emotions and who are able to recognize the emotions of others around them as well.

Since it is not possible to remove emotions from your life, you would do better to deal with them rather than try and suppress them. Suppressed emotions can only result in frustrated feelings. Even in business deals, you need to keep in mind that it is in fact people who are behind the work flow. When you understand people better you will be able to deal with them better, and therefore get a better work result out of them.

Every body knows that making the right contacts is a big part of being a successful businessman. When your social skills are right, you make contacts easily, and you social skills depend on your understanding of people’s emotions. No one wants to stay in touch with a rude or manner less person. Here we see emotional intelligence at work yet again. When we have a good level of EQ, we understand our own selves much better and therefore are at peace with our inner self as well as with other people around us.

Also, when you have the right balance of emotional intelligence understanding, you can handle stress like never before. Rather than get frustrated at situations beyond our control, we will begin to see on the brighter side of things always, and that is a healthy attitude that can only do you good in the long run.

Any way you look at it, you cannot run away from your emotions. Rather if you tried to harness the energy they create for a positive impact on your life, you will see life become better by the day.

For a long time, one’s IQ (Intelligence Quotient) was considered the leading determinant of success (financial and personal). However, as more studies looked into the lifestyles and success factors of those with high IQ’s, it became clear that this theory did not bear itself out. Many with high IQs had lives that were filled with work and relationship failures.

In 1995, a new concept in success and happiness was introduced in a book by Daniel Goleman called “Emotional Intelligence.” In what was labeled “a groundbreaking concept,” Goleman coined the term “emotional intelligence” and defined it as the ability to develop and sustain loving relationships with others, be highly self-aware yet have empathy for people and situations outside of themselves, and have a strong sense of altruism–giving back.

Based on brain and behavioral research, people with high EQ were shown to be those who truly succeeded in their work and personal lives, establishing flourishing careers and lasting, meaningful relationships.

As humans, we are highly emotional beings. We tend to run more off of our emotions than our intellect. I see this all the time in my hypnotherapy and coaching clients. Logically, what they are doing doesn’t make sense, yet they continue to do it anyway and don’t know how to stop.

What we are creating in our lives is the result of actions and our actions are based on our emotions. We tend to act more on things that are charged with emotion (E-Motion = Energy in Motion). Therefore, it makes sense that the ability to feel, identify, communicate, use, learn from, and manage our emotions will allow us to navigate life more easily and create more of what we want in our lives and less of what we don’t.

Whether one’s EQ is genetic and fixed or can be developed as children or even adults is still under debate. However, I am of the opinion that it can be developed with good resources and training. Why do I believe this? Because I have worked with hundreds of clients to do just that and have seen great transformations occur as a result.

One client recently reported, “As I am remembering more to stop myself when I’m feeling emotional and step back from the situation, I am able to respond instead of react. This is helping me immensely to stop the cycle of anger and resentment that has caused me to have unsatisfying relationships or to go off and indulge in food that is unhealthy or unnecessary.”

Before they start working with me, most of my clients are living at the mercy of their roller coaster emotions, based on past programming and external circumstances. They are constantly reacting in unconscious, knee-jerk, habitual ways that create more drama and undesirable outcomes. One of the ideas I emphasize most often and emphatically with them is that the ability to manage their emotions is one of the greatest skills they can ever develop.

If you would like to know more about Emotional Intelligence or determine what your EQ is, you can pick up Goleman’s book. There are several on-line tests you can take as well–some free and some paid. Learning to raise your EQ takes time, practice, patience, good tools, and guidance. I would suggest working with a professional who is familiar with this concept and has the tools and experience to be able to assist you with the process.

What is more important, the ability to judge situations appropriately or just the knowledge about how to handle them? Does the intelligence quotient (IQ) determine your success or failure? For years, that was an overriding belief that people felt that only IQ was important to determine how far the person reached in life. However, new behavioral research shows that IQ provides, at best, a narrow view of human intelligence. Factors such as self-awareness, impulse control, doggedness, enthusiasm, self-motivation, understanding and social dexterity contribute greatly to an individual’s success.

These qualities which are called emotional intelligence; often determine whether or not people excel in life, in relationships, and in the workplace! Therefore they have far reaching impact in their lives and how it goes on to affect every facet of their lives. These specific characteristics in a person are very important as they go on to influence every area of their life.

There are four equally important emotions that determine the EQ and how people will react in different ways.

These four emotions are fear, anger, happiness and sadness. The way that we experience, each of these emotions in our growing years, and childhood goes on to a large extent, to determine our later on development of EQ. The first one is fear. The emotion fear is associated with the feeling of one’s heart pounding. There are other manifestations of fear too such as the blood draining from one’s face, trembling and shivering, jaws clenched and a nervous laughter.

The other emotion anger, shows with a surge of energy, flushed face, blood pressure rises and clenched fists. If this emotion is not handled correctly then it can certainly mess up the person’s EQ. after that is the third emotion.ova and happiness. This is one emotion that human beings can never have enough of it and the more we have it the more our EQ raises. This is shown by an increase in energy and enthusiasm, a relaxed body, laughter and smiles all around one and no negative thoughts at all. This emotion is also indicated by no negative thoughts and the heart being filled with optimism and no worry. When you are happy then you are able to spread this good cheer all around you and you will be able to recover from setbacks far more quickly. A person who has plentiful of this emotion will be able to bounce back from all the possible failures in a jiffy and within no time what so ever.

The last of the emotion is sadness. This is represented by several body postures such as a slumped body, no energy, crying and tears, no enthusiasm and isolating and withdrawing from all those around you. The moment one is sad it affects the person’s body by making their metabolism slow down and make the person less productive then what they normally would be.

All this time, it is highly assumed that Intelligence Quotient would determine how successful we are in the future or how we could achieve that goal in a specific time.

But there is another factor that psychologists deem to be one of the contributors to determine if the person would be successful or not, and that is, the Emotional Intelligence, or EQ.

According to wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emotional_intelligence) emotional Intelligence is defined as “the ability, capacity or skill to perceive, assess and manage the emotions of one’s self, of others and of groups.” In other words, it is described that Emotional Intelligence is actually the way in which you interact with people, and how you relate to them.

Some psychologists believe that relating with people is more important than having what is inside in one’s head. According to wikipedia, some researchers believe that EQ is “a cognitive ability just as is IQ, others believe it is a combination of perceived abilities and traits, while others consider it a skill that can be measured.”

With this, researchers have found out that one of the benefits of Emotional Intelligence is how to deal and manage conflict or negotiation in school, in the home and in the workplace.

So, how does one develop emotional intelligence?

Here are some ways in order to develop Emotional Intelligence, as suggested by the website http://www.eqi.org, in a nutshell.

When dealing with Emotional Intelligence, it is best that your feelings or actions shouldn’t be centered on you. In truth, it should be directed towards the people around you – ask them how they feel about their current situation, and have the ability to reflect on what they feel. Have a compassionate heart towards your friends by empathizing with them, caring for them, and relating how they fell towards you.

Be a leader, too, by taking responsibility for your actions and feelings. Don’t rely on others to make you happy. Rely on yourself to make yourself happy.

Developing emotional intelligence may take some time and effort, but the most important thing is that you have to be conscious of your actions; you have to be conscious of not just your won feelings but the feelings of others as well.

And just try to follow this advice. This is essential to being successful.

The book written on emotional intelligence by the coveted writer Daniel Goleman has broken through a lot of myths. It used to be considered that the emotional aspect of a human being is exactly opposite to his/her rational aspect. However, with the ground breaking work of Daniel Goleman people are gradually coming to realize the importance of emotional intelligence in ones life.

On its outer appearance, the book may look like just another, average, shiny hard-bound self-development book, however, a closer look will reveal many interesting aspects. Such observations may specifically be in the part of the book that is about How to be more effective at work and get promoted. This part specifically attempts to break the defenses of people and appeals to their materialistic senses.

The book offers value much beyond its worth in money. “Emotional Intelligence” by Daniel Goldman brings forth a significant fact quite admirably that the course of a person’s life is determined as much by the persons EQ (Emotional Quotient) as it is by his/her IQ (Intelligence Quotient).

The immense value and attention that the concept of rational thinking receives is put to question. It is a commonly held misconception that a person can make correct decisions in life only based on rational thought and emotions should better be kept at bay. David Golemans ‘Emotional Intelligence’ breaks through this notion, to establish the importance that emotions deserve in any important decision of life.

A significant assertion that David Golemans has made in his work is that emotional intelligence can both be cultivated and destroyed by the conduct of an individual. One is not born with it and develops it over a period of time depending on the person’s environment and circumstances. The more trying emotional situations that a person faces in his/her life, the more better EQ the person develops and thus is able to tide over the viscitudes of life much easily.

Daniel Golemans book reveals certain aspects of an individuals’ life that can be directly attributed to his/her emotional intelligence. These are as follows:

1) Self-Awareness – Such ability helps the person to evaluate oneself. Most of the times people are so blinded by their own shortcomings that they aren’t able to think objectively. However, a person with better emotional intelligence levels never feels overwhelmed by his/her emotions and is able to clearly separate hi/her thoughts from his/her emotions.

2) Control over Impulses – The level of an individuals’ emotional intelligence also determines his/her efficiency in controlling impulsive behaviors and actions. A person who is emotionally well equipped will always be able to weigh the options correctly and be in better control of his/her emotions.

3) Sociability – This is a very important sphere of ones life that is affected greatly by the individuals’ emotional intelligence. To interact with other people socially not only involves our own emotional state of life, but also brings into play our ability to show sensitiveness to other peoples emotions. A person who is emotionally well aware can go very far in life by the effectiveness of his/her social interactions based on sound EQ levels.

Daniel Golemans ‘Emotional Intelligence’ is targeted at the core of human principles and is written to appeal to the people all over the world. It may appear to be like just another get-rich-quick system at some places, but closer observation will throw up some valid arguments. If studied and applied religiously, this book has the potential to change the course of your life for better.

Intelligence is a little understood concept like love. While we all know intuitively if a person is intelligent or not, yet it is very difficult to define intelligence in precise words. A distinguished panel of experts defined intelligence as the individual’s ability to understand complex ideas, to adapt effectively to the environment, to learn from experience, to engage in various forms of reasoning to overcome obstacles by careful thoughts.

However, most of the experts have their own definition of intelligence. Goleman, one of the international experts on “Emotional Intelligence”, believes that intelligence means how successful a person would be in school and in various kind of jobs, or how will they get along with others. Yet, it is impossible to measure such ability in a person as it is hard to measure how one would get along with others. Still some people believe that emotional intelligence is most important for the success of the person. It is said “A high IQ makes a person good managers while a high EQ (Emotional Intelligence Quotient) makes a person good leader”.

The quest for the true meaning of intelligence led Gardner to conclude that Intelligence is not a unitary trait. He concluded that man have multiple intelligences (MI). He identified as many as eight intelligence viz. Linguistic (syntax, phonology, semantics, pragmatics); Musical (pitch, rhythm, timbre), Logical (Mathematical number, categorization, relations); Spatial (accurate mental visualization, mental transformation of images); Bodily (kinesthetic control of one’s own body, control in handling objects); Interpersonal ( awareness of others’ feelings, emotions, goals, motivations); Intra-personal (awareness of one’s own feelings, emotions, goals, motivations) and Naturalist( recognition and classification of objects in the environment).

Stenberg’s gave another theory of multi-intelligence which he called “Triarchich theory of intelligence” where he divided the intelligence into three categories i.e. analytical (or componential); experimental or creative intelligence and practical intelligence.

Thus even after centuries of research, we have yet to arrive at the common definition of intelligence. When we don’t have even a common definition of intelligence, what is the relevance of the IQ tests which are so popular in all countries that a common man identifies intelligence with IQ test score?

The IQ Test

Despite of the existence of numerous definitions of intelligence, there is only one common method to measure intelligence that is accepted worldwide viz. Intelligent Quotient (IQ) test. It is also called “Binet and Simon Test” that was published in 1905. This test has withstood the test of time even after a century. The IQ test continues to be the only universally accepted method of measuring human intelligence.

IQ tests do not measure the absolute intelligence of a person but they measure the person’s intelligence in respect of the other person. The average IQ score is taken as 100. The higher than 100 score indicates that he person is more intelligent than the average person and less than 100 score indicate below average intelligence.

These IQ tests have become extremely popular over the years and almost universally applied for selection of the graduates and postgraduate students by the examinations like SAT or GRE. In most of the countries similar tests are conducted for college and university admissions. Even for selection of the candidates for jobs, often the IQ score is the quickest and most important criterion for selection.

The reason why IQ scores are such a universally accepted criterion for deciding the suitability of a person for a job or a higher course of study is not without any basis. There have been several studies which have confirmed that the people with high IQ score have much better chances of success in life. For example in an study conducted in 1925 by Lewis Terman followed the lives of the people who had IQ of 130 or more to find the relationship between the high intelligence and occupational success and social adjustment. The study established that on the average, the people with higher IQ have earned more degrees, attained higher occupational success and salaries, experienced better personal and social adjustments and found to be healthier at each age than the average adult.

However no psychologist or scientist could ever explain how such a simple test which can be completed within few minutes, can so easily measure the intelligence of the person which is such a complex trait of human personality? How can one’ ability to remember words, solve mathematical problems, fill in the blanks or reading comprehension skill has anything to do with the person’s ability to make friends, get along with people, provide leadership, adjust to social environment and succeed in life?

Defining Human Intelligence using the concept of Science of Soul

It is stated in ancient Indian and western philosophies that the physical self (body and mind) is the material manifestation of the imperceptible self of the person (soul). The soul is the source of all the “known” aspects of the human personality like, love, emotion, intelligence, habits etc which can be felt by all of us but can’t be measured. However the signature of the soul (like the DNA) is coded into all the physical aspects of the person which can be understood only by the soul of another person. Hence if a person is intelligent he can identify the soul and hence the mind of the other person through his external manifestation like action, face or speech.

It means that if you read an article, you actually understand the mind of the writer? If you see the face of the person, you know automatically if the person is truthful or a fraud, honest or dishonest, sad or happy? Intelligence, therefore, means how accurately you identify another person by knowing only little “known” aspects of him like his body movements, his gestures or his walking style? Therefore, intelligence can be defined as

Intelligence is the ability of (the soul of) an individual to understand(the soul of) another entity from one or few physical manifestation of the entity like face, signature, writings, texture of the skin, voice, walking style. .

How IQ Tests Test Your Intelligence?

The IQ tests are often divided into different categories like quantitative test, verbal ability and analytical tests. Each test measures the intelligence of the person. A typical quantitative test question may be as following.

Q. Please answer the following question as YES or NO

Ram has only forty-eight dollars. Can he buy a bicycle that costs one hundred twenty dollars if he borrows fifty-seven dollars from Tom and fifteen dollars from Harry?

The above problem is a simple problem for the students of mathematics, which may be solved even by a child. You have to simply find out if (48 +57+ 15) is more than 120 or not. If the amount is 120 or more, John can buy the bicycle otherwise he can’t. As we see here that the sum is 120 so Ram can buy the bicycle hence the answer is YES.

However, if you type this simple question to any computer, it simply can’t tell you whether the answer is Yes or No.

Why even the best computer in the world can’t solve these simple problems which even a small child of ten years can do?

The answer is simple because the computer does not have soul so it can’t understand the mind of the person who framed the problem.

We are able to understand the problem because after reading this problem we are able to understand the mind of the person who has prepared this question. We understand his mind when he framed this question? Therefore, we “understood” the problem and provided the “right” answer i.e. the answer that was there in his mind. Thus what we are reality doing by answering this question is that we are understanding the mind and logic of the person and discovering the same answer by using the same logic whic

Most of us are not new to the concept of Intelligence Quotient (IQ) and we base a lot of our professional judgments about others based on how intelligent they appear to be. On our report cards and resumes, we are quick to state our achievements when it comes to proving our intelligence. Tests, exams and other ways of gauging our intelligent have been used for many years and these are the results we use to prove how good we are. But does that say all there is to say about our intelligence? Where does the emotional side of us come in? And how important is that part?

For the past few years a lot of people, especially those in the corporate world, have been giving a lot of importance to the emotional intelligence of those working in their organization. In fact, some might even go as far as saying that EQ (emotional quotient) holds more importance than IQ. No matter what position you might hold at an organization today, your emotional intelligence plays a big part in how you conduct yourself and perform at your workplace.

Those who have studied the role of emotional intelligence at a workplace claim that it holds much more importance than most people realize. In fact, your emotional intelligence can determine such factors as how you approach your job and colleagues, how well you do your job and even what kind of promotions you manage to get. And the best part is that all this is not something that is impossible to achieve, you only need to know how to boost your emotional intelligence and apply it to reality.

It is not unheard of information that people like be around optimistic people. Most people like people who are warm, friendly and approach things with a positive attitude. And when such a person appears at a workplace, more often than not, people enjoy working with that person. Not only that, positivism can rub off on others and if you are enthusiastic about your workplace and your task at hand, that passion will definitely be felt by those around you.

Be aware of the fact that people’s like or dislike towards you can greatly be shaped by how you make someone feel. If you take a minute to think about someone who you do not particularly enjoy being with at the workplace, you might find that the dislike might come out of, not so much his or her aptitudes (or lack of it), but more because of how that person makes you feel.

For years we have not taken into consideration our emotions when it comes to our workplace. In fact, so many professionals are firm believers in not bring emotions to the workplace. But is that humanly possible? Not really, when you consider the fact that we are first emotional beings and then intellectual begins. Bringing in optimism, energy, happiness and humor to a workplace is all part of bringing your emotions to the workplace and all these are qualities that foster a healthy and motivating work environment.

All this does not mean that you have to constantly be gregarious or mirthful, but just that you should be pleasant to work with and work well alone and with others. Self-awareness, empathy, social skills and motivation are all qualities that are highly regarded in an employee and, coupled with technical skills, can lead to great success in the workplace.

How often have we heard others talk about how ‘intelligent’ they consider someone to be? Intelligence is a description of how good someone is at mentally doing something. Intelligence involves thought. Intelligence includes the ability to reason, plan, solve problems, think abstractly, comprehend ideas and language and to learn.

Do you consider yourself to be intelligent?

Schools and the education system would have us believe that we are only intelligent if we are able to solve complex abstract problems or remember facts and figures. I would agree that this is a type of intelligence and this type of intelligence is normally referred to as IQ or ‘intelligence quotient’ (a phrase coined by an American psychologist named Lewis Terman).

A small proportion of the population has a high IQ and they find the academic type of learning and activities in school relatively easy. But the vast majority of people don’t. So where does that leave everyone else?

Well, the good news is that IQ is not a measure of success. Most people with a high IQ do not go on to be as successful as their IQ score may lead us to believe. Most people with a high IQ take reasonably well paid, but routine, employment. Most are not happy with risk and rather limit their own success by becoming ‘comfortable’ and fall far short of what their potential suggests.

There is another type of intelligence that may be more important to success in life and this has been publicised by the best-selling book “Emotional Intelligence” (or EQ) by Daniel Goleman (although the term was first used several years earlier by two academics – Mayer and Salovey).

EQ has to do with recognizing, understanding, and choosing how we think, feel, and act. It shapes our interactions with others and our understanding of ourselves. It defines how and what we learn; it allows us to set priorities; it determines the majority of our daily actions.

EQ is the capacity to create positive outcomes in our relationships with ourselves and others. These learnable skills create joy, love, and success of all kinds.

Studying EQ it becomes clear that IQ has less to do with success in life than EQ. The good news is that we all have EQ and that it can be developed. We can develop our EQ to help us build our relationships with others, to use our emotions appropriately, to focus our efforts and to become more successful in life.

EQ may be so important that it could be the best predictor of who will succeed in any area of life.

Can we look beyond IQ and EQ?

When you look at the world, do you see only space and time, mass and energy, logic and reason? Or do you also see connectivity and design, purpose and meaning, faith and mystery?

In his book “What’s your SQ?” Michael Guillen has developed the idea of ‘spiritual intelligence’ or SQ. SQ considers your views beyond the materialistic living of modern life. Without spirituality it is possible to become very unhappy or dissatisfied with life no matter how much material possessions we accumulate.

Can you be successful if you are not truly happy? I would argue not and that a balance of IQ, EQ and SQ are necessary for a happy and successful life.

Are there any other forms of intelligence? Yes, there is another important theory on multiple intelligences and you can read about that in another article.

To be happy and successful in life focus on your EQ and SQ. If you are fortunate enough to have some IQ too then all the better – but don’t rely on your IQ alone.

IQ test means Intelligence Quotient, with the help of IQ tests intelligence test you can measure your ability of your work in any field, if you get high IQ level in IQ intelligence test that means there is chances of highly complex jobs.
