A good friend recently suggested one of his best-loved self-help books to me – it was the most recent in a growing list of recommended reading. In chatting with him, I enquired as to how he was finding putting into practice his learning from all his reading. It emerged from our conversation that, in fact, he was a life-long student of living life to the full but was likely to never actually give it a go. He informed me that a friend of his had suggested to him that he “stop reading the bloody books and starting doing it!”

Bookshops are full of personal development books. This is big business – possibly the fastest growing sector of the publishing market. Also, personal development websites proliferate – offering all manner of inducements to purchase their program which is guaranteed to change your life in five minutes!

But none of these books or programs will change your life. They may well point you in the right direction, provide you with an understanding that had been absent from your range of experience or knowledge or suggest concrete suggestions on how to get more out of life, change your life, transform yourself or whatever. no doubt about it, there is some excellent stuff available – and some innovative and practical personal development online help – but none of it is going to be of any use to you until you put it into practice for yourself and regularly put it into practice.

It’s down to you to change your life. Only you can grasp control of the awesome inner power that is simply waiting for you to muster up the courage or energy to unleash it. The interesting thing is that much of the advice provided by websites or books requires very little work of you, requires that you make only very minor alterations to the way in which you use your mind. Unfortunatley though, having been in this business for over fourteen years, I have seen far too many people unwilling to take five minutes each day to make the other twenty three hours and fifty five minutes so much better.

And this leads me to the main point – one that I’ve already alluded to – you have to keep putting what you learn into practice. No book, program or package will change your life in five minutes. You’re not going to change your life in five minutes. However, five minutes each and every day is an entirely different proposition – if you make or take the time to ensure that your mind is up to speed each and every morning then your life will change beyond all recognition. Psychology tells us in no uncertain terms that normal people perceive only what they expect to perceive and only experience what they expect to experience – that the normal life is dictated by the sadly blind normal mind. Open your mind each morning, change your expectations and your life will change. But, in essence, it’s entirely up to you – no one else can do it for you.

It’s obvious, success means different things to different people – their particular objectives are unique to them alone, their loved ones and their circumstances. Unfortunately however, more often than not, definitions of success are based on the norms of the society in which we find ourselves – we look to the achievements of society’s apparently successful people as our barometer and, consequently, our definitions of success become comparative, competitive and, all too often, materially focused.

However, on closer examination, those held aloft as paragons of success are nothing more than naked emperors. Sure, they may be successful in one aspect of their lives but other aspects of their lives may well be a complete mess. Or, indeed, many so-called successful people have ascended the ladder of success whilst walking over others or trampling other people’s aspirations into the dirt – if they get a good night’s sleep it is only because they have chosen to ignore the damage that they have done.

True success is more than that. Real success needs to be multi-faceted. Indeed, true success must exhibit itself in every aspect of your life, otherwise you’re fooling yourself, you’re living down to society’s expectations. When I work with my clients, I spend plenty of time facilitating their defining success for themselves. This is the framework definition that I offer them.

“I’m really good at what I do, I put my heart and soul into it and it turns me on. I get well rewarded for it and it makes a positive difference to those whose lives I touch. I have a balanced life, putting my heart and soul into everything I do, every place I am, with everybody with whom I find myself. I have a wonderful personal life and fantastic real relationships. I do what’s necessary so that I’m fit and healthy. And I ensure that I spend plenty of time doing the things that really excite me – my life is an adventure. I am happy in my own skin, at peace in my own company.”

After that, of course, each individual’s definition of success is unique and personal. You see taking this rounded perspective on success changes our perspective of what it is to have truly reached the pinnacle of human achievement. Success needs to be, above all else, felt and experienced within. Happiness and success should go hand in hand – and the only place that you will find true happiness is within. Where else would you expect to find it?

Everything else – the cars, the holidays, the second homes, the job titles – is transient. Like everything else in life, these things arise for a time and then pass away. Real success and happiness should not be dependent upon or attached to any of these passing fads. Seek “attachment-based” success and you’re only setting yourself up for disappointment. Alternatively, seek the inner peace and happiness that comes with true, balanced, across-the-board success and you will arrive at a place on which so few even take the trouble to set their sights in the first place.

It appears that we are built to worry – it appears to be an integral part of our hard-wiring – it’s a major hurdle on our path to personal development. And, if we can’t find something to worry about, we’ll create something. Some time back I had a client telephone me to say “Now I’m really worried!” When I asked what he was actually worried about, he said “I’m worried because I’ve nothing to worry about! You know the way something this good cannot last!” Another exceptionally focused client who, like a lot of business people, is finding times a little challenging in the current environment, told me recently that not only is his wife a born worrier, she tries to drag him into her drama too. “She asked me yesterday evening if I was worried. I told her that I wasn’t, that, in fact, we’ve nothing to worry about and that business is turning the corner. A little later, over a glass of wine, she continued ‘I know you, you can’t fool me, I know you’re worried!’”

What’s worry all about? It is the product of the over-active imagination of the normal mind which, research indicates, is predisposed to dwelling on negative thoughts. It is one of the key ways in which the conscious mind spends the day – while we’re actually supposed to be doing the productive things that will take us to where we want to go in life (assuming that we want to go anywhere exciting, given our propensity to think the worst!). Even worse, worry pours our precious mental energy into what we don’t want to happen. And, on the basis that this energetic universe of ours is responsive to where we invest our energy, we’re actually actively working to undermine ourselves. That is what worry is all about.

But it gets worse. When it comes to worry, the biggest crime is that we have actually lost that all-important resource that we most need to get on with bettering ourselves in life – our own vital energy. As I’ve said already, worry misdirects our energy. Effectively, it means that we don’t have enough energy to even do what we’re supposed to be actually doing in the here and now. And, based on the fact that our universe is indeed responsive, we’re going to get little or nothing out of life if we put so little into actually living it.

Worry is simply an extreme form of useless thought. The adult mind is plagued by useless thoughts, many of which can be distractive. But worry is actually destructive – we’re destroying our own life.

And you will not stop worry by fighting it. Like trying to give up cigarettes (the more you think about not having one, the more you want one), the more you fight worry, the more it will plague you. No – you have to stop worry by ignoring it. Ignore it – it will go away! After all, what were you worrying about this day last year – I bet you that you’ve no idea! How do you ignore the bad habit of a normal adult lifetime? Throw yourself one hundred percent into what you actually should be doing now – you might even find that you’ll do it all the better. It might even change your life.

There’s an old saying that even the greatest journey starts with the tiniest of steps – or words to that effect! And, certainly, so it is with the very personal journey that some describe as Personal Growth. But the challenge in life is not just to start a journey, but to keep going. Research points to the fact that the vast majority of people who stumble or fail on their chosen journey – be it a new business venture, a weight loss goal, their desire to progress in a particular career or the desire to progress at a particular sport or musical instrument – will, having failed once, rarely try more than a couple of times. Yet, statistics for the University of Madrid’s Business School show that those who are really successful are prepared to pick themselves up, dust themselves off and get on with it for just as many times as it takes. And it was Calvin Coolidge who alerted us to the importance of persistence, stating that only perseverance leads to success.

Last week, a client and I discussed the importance of regularly and continually taking even the smallest of steps to ensure that they stayed on their chosen path – their own Personal Development journey to effortless career success and personal health and happiness. The idea that even two or three minutes meditation in a day is infinitely better than no mental exercising at all was likened to us putting another penny in the slot so that, sooner or later, pennies will drop for us. I don’t know about you but, when I was growing up, we often went to the amusement arcade where you rolled pennies down a slot, onto a moving platform that had loads of pennies – most of them appeared as if they were about to cascade over the edge, into my hand!

In life, in business, in meditation, we simply do not know which penny will tip the balance in our favour. But the one sure thing is that, if we stop putting our daily penny in the slot, we will not reap the benefit of the pennies that we have already invested. In fact, we will come to the incorrect conclusion that we have wasted all our previous pennies. Every penny counts – every minute that you invest in your own Personal Development no matter how seemingly insignificant, every moment spent in mindfulness, leads you to a greater awareness, a greater level of presence, opens your mind further to the incredible possibilities that this life holds for us and, indeed, the opportunities that may well be staring you in the face if you only had eyes to see.
For everyone with whom I have worked, sooner or later, pennies drop. But, if you really want to Change Your Life, you’ve got to put your next penny in the slot – today…

The issue with change is not so much what we think of change, but rather how we respond to it. In all honesty, there are probably few words that throw up such a kaleidoscope of emotions and differing interpretations for us.

On the one hand, change is exciting. We all wish our lives to be ‘different’ in some way, after all, there is no progress without change. However, the word can be viewed in a negative light, as change is as likely to be bad as it is good.

Synonyms for the word ‘changeable’ include: ‘uncertain’, ‘volatile’, ‘unstable, ‘unsettled’. These words throw up emotions for us that make us feel ‘vunerable’, ‘unsure’ and / or ‘insecure’.

There is a small corner in all of us which likes to feel safe and secure and change is not compatible with that. However, after change has taken places, we very often call it ‘progress’, ‘evolution’, ‘expansion’, ‘growth’ or ‘advancement’, and this throws up a far more positive set of emotions.

Therefore, it appears that it is not change itself which scares us so much as the transition process that it entails – that step into the unknown. We feel comfortable with the stability of things as they are ‘now’. Now feels safe because of its familiarity; yet our ‘now’ is changing every day.

Maybe it is not change that we fear so much as the loss of control that we associate with change. Change inherently carries an element of risk. Sometimes that perceived risk is so big that it prevents us making changes that we need to despite our unhappiness with our current situation.

At the other end of the scale, there are times when we have all been guilty of making changes just for the sake it. We change our hair color, we change the layout of our bedroom, we may even change where we work.

I used to change jobs every 3 or 4 months, as no job I ever found was the ‘right job’. I believed that if I found the ‘right job’ I would be happy. However, someone once pointed out to me that you could move to a different planet and everything that really matters would still be the same, because you are still taking ‘you’ with you.

Why? We do it to avoid making the changes that really matter in our lives. Deep down, it might be our choice of career that is making us unhappy, but we will change our hair color ‘just to make ourselves feel better’, because that is an easy and manageable change for us to cope with.

Seeing as change is inevitable, why not embrace it? Use change as an opportunity to evaluate what your life, and course correct. Use it as your key to success. That’s what successful people do, so why not you too?

As a final point, I will give you a quote by Charles Darwin – “It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change.”

In our business, we have 5 underlying strategies for success that we call: ‘The 5 Pillars Of Success’. These principles are used as a daily ‘success checklist’ by which we run our business and our lives.

One of those ‘Pillars Of Success’ is ‘The Expectation Of Leadership In Yourself And Others’. Think about this for a moment. Our whole life, in all the various roles in which we find ourselves, we expect (often even demand), leadership in others.

As there are many different definitions of leadership, let me define what I mean by leadership. To lead, for me, is to be in service for other people. Leadership means service.

Leadership calls for respect, and respect has nothing at all to do with ‘like’. It took me a while to realize that ‘respect’ does not have to go hand in hand with ‘like’ and, likewise, ‘leadership’ does not have to go hand in hand with ‘telling people how to do something’. Rather, it is to do with inspiring people and empowering them to do things for themselves.

To be a leader, we need to first start respecting ourselves. We need to show up every day in our lives and in our businesses and give both the respect they deserve. Quite simply, we can not help other people before we help ourselves.

As a child, we naturally assume that our parents will be our leaders. At school, we expect out teachers to be leaders. As adults, in every single one of our daily transactions, there is an expectation of leadership from the many people that we come into contact with.

We expect the boss to lead the company. We expect the shop assistant to ‘be in charge’ for us so that we can select and pay for our goods. We expect the bank clerk to explain the state of our finances and to lead us through our financial transactions.

Wed expect leadership in others literally every day. But what of the leadership we give to others? If we expect those around us to be in leadership for us, shouldn’t we be expecting leadership in ourselves also? Shouldn’t we be demanding that we are also a role model?

So, the next time you find yourself getting frustrated whilst standing in line at the bank, or cussing the weatherman for getting the forecast wrong, ask yourself this – Do you stand in leadership for yourself and others in all aspects of your life every single day?

If you are a good leader, then congratulations, I can guarantee that your life and your business are thriving right now. However, if you’re not currently being the leader that you should be, before you point the finger of blame at somebody else, remember that that you are no better than them, and people you know are pointing at and blaming you.

Of the many secrets to success, being a ‘Plan A’ person is perhaps one of the most fundamental of all. So then, what is a ‘Plan A’ person, and how can you tell if you are being one?

First of all, let me define what a ‘Plan A’ person is. A friend of mine, who is a perfect example of a ‘Plan A’ person, put it like this: “A ‘Plan A’ person is a person who’s plan B is that plan A works”. Simple, right? No ‘if’s', no ‘buts’, and definitely no plan B. Plan A works. Full stop.

If you want to be a ‘Plan A’ person, then important lesson number 1 is to establish your plan A. You need to make sure that it is a good one too, after all, there will be no plan B as a back-up for it.

Important lesson number 2 is to never give up on plan A. Sometimes life throws up barriers, and when you come face to face with obstacles, some of life’s little stumbling blocks, you need to be resolute.

Having just one plan is really to your benefit here as, when you have more than one choice, you stop to consider your choices and ponder on the best route to take going forwards. When that happens, you take your eyes off the prize, make the wrong choice, and your original intentions become diluted.

Important lesson number 3 is to not, under any circumstances, change plan A. Remember, that if you make any changes to plan A, then it becomes plan B, and those are no longer allowed!

Now you know what being a ‘Plan A’ person involves. The question now is how to change to be a ‘Plan A’ person. How can you step up from being a Plan B, C, D or even E person?

As they say, success breeds success and, likewise, ‘Plan A’ people breed ‘Plan A’ people. The alphabet only goes up to Z, so I don’t even think there is even a proper term that describes me before I made the conscious decision to become a ‘Plan A’ person i.e I was a ‘Plan Z+’ person.

However, by making friends with, doing business with, reading the same books as, and following the same strategies as ‘Plan A’ people, I soon became one too. It really is as simple as emulating the successful people (who are invariably ‘Plan A’ people that you want to be like.

If I can do it, and lots of people I’ve met can do it, then so can you. You’ve already taken the first step in the right direction, you now just need to not look back again. Do that, and the success that you’ve always dreamed of will soon be yours!

There are many ways in which to induce a tranquil, relaxed state of mind, in which the body is still, and the conscious mind is simply placed aside for a while as the subconscious mind assumes a more dominant role, and allows the therapeutic cognitive processes which are innate in all of us to become active.

This state of mind, known as the hypnotic state is very simply created by;
- Focusing one’s attention.
- Relaxing the body.
- Allowing unnecessary thoughts to enter, then exit, without any rationalisation.

This process can be easily accomplished by the technique that follows. It is known as the “Eye Roll Technique’, and is a very old but powerful way of entering a safe therapeutic hypnotic trance. When in this relaxed state of mind, it is possible to offer oneself any positive suggestions or affirmations in order to bring about the changes which you desire. Examples of positive statements and affirmations are given further on.

THE TECHNIQUE.
If possible, find yourself a quiet place and either sit down or lie down comfortably.
Roll up your eyes, just as if you were trying to look at your eyebrows.
Allow your eyelids to slowly close, and as you do so, take in a deep breath and hold it.

As you slowly exhale, allow your upturned eyes to return to their normal position.

As you finish exhaling, enjoy that gentle, floating sensation that you will experience.
At the same time, imagine your right hand to be very light, like it has a childs helium balloon tied to it making it rise gently. You may be surprised at the ease by which your hand and arm seem to float up by themselves.
This floating hand signal is a signal from your subconscious mind that you are entering a state of deep relaxation.

As you remain in this deeply relaxed, hypnotic state of mind, offer yourself any positive, therapeutic suggestions which you feel will help to bring about the changes you really want or need.
Remain in this state for 10-20 minutes, that’s really all that’s needed.

You can repeat the process as many times a day as you like.

EXITING THE TRANCE STATE.
Roll up your eyes behind your closed eyelids.
Very slowly, allow your eyelids to open, and the eyes to focus.
Make a tight fist with your right hand, and as you do, allow this light floating hand to drift down into a comfortable position. As it comes to rest, release the tight fist and gently stretch those fingers.……FINISHED !!!!

If necessary, the exit from the trance state can be accomplished any time by going through the steps listed above.

It may take you a little time to perfect the technique, especially if you are the ‘on the go all the time’ sort of person. Relaxation comes easier to some people than to others, so always bear this in mind.

Remember, if you want to make positive changes in your life, this relatively short use of your time can pay great dividends in the end. The beauty of it is that once you have practiced and mastered the technique, you will be able to enter the relaxed state much more easily and deeply.

Another point to remember is that everyone is capable of entering into a hypnotic state.
But just as we are all different, so is the ease with which we enter into a hypnotic trance.
Some will succeed on their first or second attempt, where as others may need many more attempts. It took me a week and a half, and about 15 attempts before I achieved a hypnotic state. The motto is—PERSERVERE. It may take time, but the rewards are well worth the effort.

The use of hypnosis for children is starting to be a common method in dealing with children who are having difficulties in advancing into adulthood. Aside from using hypnosis to deal with different behavioural and health problems, hypnosis parenting or using hypnosis with your children at home is also starting to get known.

Hypnosis parenting, experts claim, is a method o positive parenting. What are ideas behind this parenting and how do they work?

Hypnosis is not ordering or becoming authoritative to other people. This is something that we should understand and be clear about. Hypnosis, unlike what we commonly know, is not about making people do something which they would not remember or stop doing. Hypnosis is about suggestions.

Experts said that our children are already suggestible from their parents. Almost all parents are familiar with their baby’s emotions and facial expressions. Actually, if we smile in a baby and make eye contact it is highly possible that would be smiling back. Children learn from the parents through the parents’ actions and expressions. If a parent want to teach something to their children, it is important to show an example that we are also following these rules that were set out for them.

Hypnosis parenting is not only applicable when you want your children to do their homework or do household chores. You can only use hypnosis to help them with difficulty in sleeping or nervousness and tension before exams, school presentation or a game.

How to do this?

You can start by talking to them before they go to sleep. Make sure that they are comfortable and make them close their eyes. You could start telling a story which would show the protagonist succeeding in the challenges that he faced. Use positive images when telling a story. This would help your child ease the tension. Aside from helping your child ease out the tension, the parent and the child also got the chance to spent some bonding moment together.

What the parent say have an impact on how children feel about themselves. An example would be the behaviour they show. If the child is refuses to follow certain rules in the house, and you get a heated discussion over it, more probably that the child would still be the same.

You could replace the heated discussion with random positive statements, like saying that the child are improving much on their behaviour and acknowledging their efforts to behave. The child will feel better and eventually will believe that he is indeed behaving well. Soon enough, the child will change his behaviour for the better.

These simple suggestions helped the children’s mind or its subconscious to accept and believe in them. So if the statements made or the statements that a child can hear are all negative, the subconscious would believe it and the child will follow it in real life.

But if positive statements are heard by the child, even if they are randomly dropped statements, the subconscious perceive this as the truth and would eventually translate into their actions.

Hypnosis for children can even be used in encouraging them to do household chores. All you want to do is look at them straight into the eyes and ask them to do the household chores. A little bobbing of the head, would encourage your child to agree to do the job delegated to them.

conversational hypnosis can be learned by listening to simple hypnosis audios teachings with an instruction manual.

One of the biggest triggers for an episode of stress, depression or anxiety is a change to our lives, particularly unwanted change such as a death of a loved one, a job loss or a relationship breakdown. These are unpleasant experiences and for many, a prolonged period of mental trauma followed.

During the past week, two friends of mine have experienced differing major changes to their lives yet both reacted in exactly the same way. There is a very important skill to be learned from both experiences when it comes to change, and I’ll share it with you. Before I do, let’s look at how two totally different changes can trigger the same reaction but with drastically different emotional results.

Jimmy was my best buddy during childhood and our families were good friends. I haven’t seen him for a while and out of the blue, I bumped into him whilst on a night out. Sadly, his news wasn’t good as his father had passed away after battling cancer that very morning. Obviously, he’d known for a while that his father’s days were numbered but despite this, he was still in a state of shock and of course, he was deeply saddened.

I wished that our greeting could’ve been in happier circumstances, but such is the tide of life.

The following day, Paul, my best friend, rang me and told me some very good news. After studying and working hard for the last two years, he had reached his goal: a fully qualified commercial airline pilot. Knowing how focused and dedicated he’s been I was absolutely delighted for him! Of course, he was buzzing with excitement about the future that now awaits him.

OK, both of them supplied the same meaning to their circumstances by saying EXACTLY the same phrase:

“Things will never be the same again.”

Same phrase, but a world apart in meaning.

In the first situation, the loss of a loved one is an unwanted change, a change that cannot be prevented. In the second situation, the qualifications are a wanted, planned change, a change brought about by conscious choice to achieve a desired lifestyle.

However, there is a very important lesson you can learn from both that can help you deal with change, whether it’s a desired change like a change of job or an unwanted change like loss of a loved one.

Look at the phrase again. It describes not just individual experiences but the whole of life on planet earth. Because NOTHING in this life will stay the same. It just isn’t the nature of life. The very nature of life itself is a constant cycle of birth and death.

As a species, humanity has evolved throughout its history and will continue to do so. The way life is today is dramatically different than it was just 20 years ago. Technology, science, education, standards of living – you name it, it changes.

Look at your own life and you’ll see that change has been ever present. People, jobs, relationships, lifestyle – none of it has ever stayed the same. And imagine how boring life would be if everyday was exactly the same!

Reacting to change in a catastrophic or euphoric manner isn’t the way to deal with it. Far better – and far less emotionally arousing – is to accept that change is a constant of life whether we want change or not and that change will always happen. It’s how you adapt and assign meanings to change that counts.

Keep this in mind when change occurs and you won’t become emotionally traumatized. Change is a constant and indeed, things will never be the same again!
