How do you combat procrastination?

I procrastinate a lot and want to stop. I can accomplish much more if I get off my ass.

What’s the reward you get from not doing what you want to do? Then decide if you want this reward, this good feeling it provides, to stop you from getting what you want. If you agree with the rationale of the reward, you’ll procrastinate. If not, then you won’t.

The power lies within your choice of agreeing or disagreeing. But base it on what you want for you rather than the rationale of the reward. Otherwise, you’ll be bouncing from one rationale to another, and none of the rationales have anything to do with what YOU really want.

It is hard. I’m a pretty bad procrastinator myself. But, I’m getting better. I just try and get myself in the mind set that I don’t want this or that hanging over my head and if I get it done I don’t have to worry about it anymore. It’s just MAKING yourself do things. Self discipline is the key.

Good luck.

I make a list of things that I want to get done within 3 months (make appts., etc.). Then I make a daily list of about 3 things and I make myself do them. It feels great to be able to cross them off. You might just feel overwhelmed and somewhat paralyzed because you feel you have so much to do. This really works for me. Just start small with 1 -3 tasks a day and move forward. Hope this helps. I’ve been there! :)

there’s a fine line between depression and procrastination.

If you are procrastinating you may have one of two issues.
1. The thing you are avoiding doesn’t motivate you. If this is the case, embrace this part of your character. If it’s important enough you’ll get it done. If it isn’t important enough it’s just other people’s noise cluttering your life.

2. Your energy is too low to respond to things of importance. Explore symptoms of ADD and make the painful withdrawal from stimulants…yes, stop drinking coffee. Try it for a month then tell me you don’t feel a ton better! I dare you! Then, as we all do, you’ll fall back into the Starbucks marketing vacuum
and have that coffee, at which point you’ll withdraw again because you felt damn good! Back to the ADD thing, this is a serious problem if you have it and coffee withdrawal will help reduce symptoms.
I share this with you as a short note of my own personal battles with this issue and affirm my battle with accepting this advise from others.
Let me also just say, that I am not a doctor, but I played one at Holiday Inn express last night. Thank you, you’ve been a dynamite audience.

Set short term and long term goals. Make time frames for each goal. Break up the long-term goals into simple steps and make time frames for those as well.

Getting organized is what helped me break my procrastination habit.

Try having an agenda book. look in it each morning(if you remember to write down what needs to be done). also get a calender and mark off each day something is due on. this way you will "feel" deadlines approaching and it will motivate you to get off your can and do it.
if you live w/ anyone else have them nag you to death to get something done. Once it’s done, the nagging stops!
